Yes, in most cases a trailer weighing more than 750kg must be registered before it is towed to or through most countries in Europe.
The UK Trailer Registration Scheme gives the trailer its own registration number and registration certificate for international journeys. The trailer must display its own registration plate—also commonly called a trailer number plate or licence plate—separate from the plate fitted to the towing vehicle.
When does a trailer need to be registered?
Under current GOV.UK guidance, all trailers over 750kg must generally be registered before travelling to or through most European countries.
Registration is not normally required when a trailer is used only:
- within the United Kingdom
- for journeys solely between the United Kingdom and Ireland
- in Cyprus, Malta or Spain
However, the trailer must still be registered if the journey to Cyprus, Malta or Spain passes through a country where the registration rules apply.
What must the driver carry?
For an international journey where registration is required, the trailer must:
- be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
- display its own trailer registration plate
- have a trailer registration certificate that can be shown to a foreign authority on request
Abnormal-load trailers may also require a keeper's certificate, which should be carried in the vehicle when travelling abroad.

The online registration service asks for information including the trailer manufacturer, trailer type, VIN or chassis number, and its gross and unladen weights.
