How the Exeros Bridge Warning System Works
Maintaining awareness of vehicle height and applicable bridge height restrictions remains fundamental to avoiding bridge strikes. The Exeros Bridge Strike Warning System provides an additional layer of protection by monitoring the road ahead and assessing potential low-bridge hazards against the height of the vehicle.
Rather than depending solely on stored mapping information, the system brings together camera-based detection, GPS positioning and automatic vehicle-height data to help identify when an approaching bridge presents a genuine risk.
As the vehicle travels, forward-facing camera technology is used to identify bridges and recognise height restriction signage. GPS data provides additional location information, while RFID-based detection establishes the relevant vehicle height without relying on the driver to enter it manually. This is particularly useful for fleets where tractor and trailer combinations can change.
Where the system identifies a bridge ahead that may not provide sufficient clearance, an in-cab warning can be generated early enough for the driver to respond.
Reducing False Alerts
Systems based primarily on location data can generate alerts because a low bridge is nearby, even when it is on another road or does not present a hazard to the vehicle's intended route. Frequent irrelevant warnings can become a distraction and may ultimately reduce driver confidence in the technology.
By assessing camera vision alongside GPS positioning and vehicle-height information, the Exeros system has more information available to determine whether an approaching bridge represents a genuine clearance risk. According to Exeros, this combined approach can reduce false alerts by more than 90% compared with GPS-only systems.
Automatic vehicle-height detection also removes a potential source of human error by reducing reliance on manually entered height information, particularly where vehicles or trailers are regularly changed.
Driver Warnings and Video Telematics
When a potential clearance conflict is identified, the driver can be alerted within the cab. Depending on the specified installation, warnings can include audible, visual or voice alerts, with haptic seat-vibration alerts also available. The objective is to draw the driver's attention to the hazard while there is still an opportunity to stop safely or take an alternative route.
The bridge warning technology can also integrate with the Exeros VideMatics platform. Video footage, GPS position, timestamps and journey information can provide fleet operators with additional context when reviewing an incident or near miss, supporting subsequent investigation and driver coaching.
The system can operate as a dedicated solution or form part of a broader Exeros vehicle-safety installation, with compatible technologies including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), driver fatigue detection and SkEye View 360° camera systems.
For operators of high commercial vehicles, this technology can form part of a wider bridge-strike prevention strategy alongside route planning, driver awareness and accurate knowledge of vehicle height.
Specifying the System on Don-Bur Vehicles
The Exeros Bridge Strike Warning System can be considered as part of the safety equipment specification for applicable new Don-Bur trailers and rigid bodywork.
Requirements should ideally be discussed during vehicle specification so that the installation, vehicle configuration and any integration with other camera or safety systems can be considered as part of the overall build.
