RotaRail side guard

RotaRail® Side Under-Run Protection for HGVs and Trailers

RotaRail® is a patented side under-run protection enhancement designed to improve safety for vulnerable road users around heavy goods vehicles and trailers.

The system works in conjunction with conventional lateral protection devices by introducing a secondary articulated rail positioned closer to the road surface. Its purpose is to reduce the risk of pedestrians, cyclists or mobility aids entering the space beneath a vehicle during side-impact or low-speed interaction scenarios.

Limitations of Conventional Side Guards

Standard side guards are designed to meet dimensional and strength requirements under UNECE Regulation No. 73. To operate reliably in real-world conditions, they must also maintain sufficient ground clearance to avoid contact with speed humps, kerbs and other road obstacles.

This necessary clearance can result in a vertical gap between the road surface and the lowest edge of the side guard, creating a recognised risk area beneath the vehicle.

How RotaRail® Improves Side Protection

RotaRail® addresses this risk by adding a low-mounted articulated rail beneath the primary side guard.

  • The rail is positioned closer to the road surface than a conventional lateral protection device
  • A hinged mechanism allows the rail to rotate upwards when it encounters obstacles
  • Once clear of the obstacle, the rail automatically returns to its operating position

This approach improves side under-run protection without compromising vehicle ground clearance or manoeuvrability.

Key Safety Characteristics

  • Close-to-ground barrier that reduces exposed underbody space
  • Passive mechanical operation with no sensors or electronic systems
  • Continuous protection along the length of the vehicle side
  • Designed to complement existing compliant side guard installations

Compatibility and Installation

RotaRail® is suitable for rigid vehicles and trailers and can be specified on new builds or installed as a retrofit. The system is intended to operate alongside compliant side guard installations rather than replace them.

Testing and Compliance Context

The system has undergone independent evaluation by the UK Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and is designed to function in conjunction with side guards that comply with UNECE Regulation No. 73.

RotaRail® is a supplementary safety measure intended to enhance side under-run protection beyond baseline regulatory requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does RotaRail® replace standard side guards?

No. RotaRail® is designed to operate alongside compliant side guards. It enhances protection at ground level but does not replace the requirement for side guards that meet UNECE Regulation No. 73.

How does the articulated rail avoid damage from kerbs and speed humps?

The rail is mounted on a hinged mechanism that allows it to rotate upwards when it encounters obstacles. Once clear, it returns automatically to its normal operating position.

Is RotaRail® an active or electronic safety system?

No. RotaRail® operates as a passive mechanical system. It does not rely on sensors, electronics or driver intervention.

Can RotaRail® be retrofitted to existing vehicles?

Yes. The system can be specified on new vehicle builds or installed as a retrofit, provided it is integrated alongside compliant side guard systems.
