PIR Sensor

Labcraft TS5 PIR/2 PIR Sensor for Lighting | SKU ELC0379

The Labcraft TS5 PIR/2 is a PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor designed to automate lighting and support security functions in commercial vehicle applications. PIR sensors detect changes in infrared energy generated by body heat and movement. These sensors are typically installed in trailers or rigid bodywork to control lighting or trigger alerts when personnel are present.

When movement is detected, the sensor triggers a connected system, such as interior lighting or a monitoring device. This functionality helps improve energy efficiency by reducing unnecessary lighting usage while enhancing usability and safety.

How PIR Sensors Work

A PIR device monitors infrared radiation within its detection zone. When a person enters this zone, the sensor detects the change in thermal pattern, interpreting it as motion. The sensor then sends a signal to the connected system to trigger the appropriate response, such as lighting or security functions.

Installation Considerations

  • Position the sensor to provide an unobstructed sensing path across the interior space.
  • Avoid mounting near heat sources or airflow that could cause false activations.
  • Ensure the lens remains clean and unobstructed for consistent performance.

Typical Applications

  • Automatic interior lighting for trailers and rigid bodies.
  • Occupancy detection for operational safety.
  • Inputs for security equipment or alert systems.
  • Telematics platform signals to indicate interior activity or heat signatures.

FAQs

How sensitive are PIR sensors inside trailers or rigid bodies?

Sensitivity varies by model, but most units detect changes in body heat and movement within a defined cone or range. Correct positioning is important for reliable detection.

Do temperature changes affect accuracy?

Large temperature swings can influence performance. PIR sensors work best when there is a clear difference between ambient conditions and body temperature.

Can vibration during transport cause false triggers?

PIR sensors respond to infrared changes rather than vibration, though sudden environmental changes may occasionally activate them. Most lighting systems are configured to operate only when the vehicle is stationary.

Can PIR sensors be used for security or telematics?

Yes. When connected to compatible systems, PIR sensors can trigger alerts or notify telematics platforms of interior activity, helping operators monitor unauthorized access or unexpected movement.

Is maintenance required?

Maintenance is minimal. Regularly cleaning the sensor lens and checking electrical connections during routine inspections should be sufficient.
