Understanding TPMS / Tyre Pressure Monitoring And Reg 141
TPMS stands for Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and comprises a pressure sensor in the wheel (valve or rim types) which communicates with an external receiver.
From July 2022, under Regulation UN ECE R141, all new commercial HGV trailer types submitted for European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EU WVTA) must have TPMS. From 7 July 2024, under EU WVTA, all newly registered trailers must have TPMS fitted.
Trailers certified under GB National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA) and Individual Type Approval (IVA) are currently exempt.
TPRS (Tyre Pressure Refill System) and CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation System) both have pressure regulators built-in so these are being treated as an equivalent of the TPMS function.
