TPMS stands for Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and comprises a pressure sensor in the wheel (valve or rim types) which communicates with an external receiver. From July 2022, under Regulation UN ECE R141 , all new commercial HGV trailer types submitted for European Whole Vehicle Type Approval ( EU WVTA ) must have TPMS. From 7 July 2024, under EU WVTA, all newly registered trailers must have TPMS fitted. Trailers certified under GB National Small Series Type Approval ( NSSTA ) and Individual Type Approval ( IVA ) are currently exempt. TPRS (Tyre Pressure Refill System) and CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation System) both have pressure regulators built-in so these are being treated as an equivalent of the TPMS function.
