Changes to Rigid Chassis GB Type Approval | Jan 2025

news -> type-approval

From January 2025, there will be a significant change to the process for acquiring GB type approval for rigid chassis vehicles (incomplete), and it’s essential for our customers to be aware of the implications this change will bring.

Incomplete rigid chassis vehicles are designated with either EU or GB approval numbers at point of order with the truck dealer/manufacturer. Following this, stage 2 GB type approval is applied to the body to complete the process. If the incomplete truck chassis is initially designated with EU type approval number, dealers will no longer be able to change the status of the vehicle approval for incomplete vehicles.

Key Change From January 2025

Starting January 2025, it will no longer be possible to change the designation of a type-approved chassis from EU to GB. This means:

  • An incomplete chassis designated with an EU type approval number will remain as such and cannot be reclassified with a GB approval number.
  • For incomplete vehicles placed in the GB market, any truck chassis with EU type approval will be required to follow an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) process to meet GB standards.

Implications for Customers

This change introduces potential unexpected costs, as the IVA process involves additional offsite inspections and administrative work. Quite commonly, it is not the customer who places the order for a truck chassis; instead, the customer is likely to liaise with a truck dealership, which places the order to comply with customer requirements. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the dealership orders the truck chassis with the correct GB or EU approval.

  • Don-Bur will not be held responsible for these additional costs.
  • Any costs incurred during the IVA process will need to be charged back to the customer.

Our Commitment

Karl Forster, Engineering Manager at Don-Bur comments:

We are committed to supporting our customers through this transition and ensuring that you are fully informed of any changes that might affect your operations. However, we strongly advise that customers review their chassis orders carefully and ensure the correct type approval designation is in place to avoid unexpected delays or expenses.

If you have any questions or require further clarification about these changes, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The cut off dates starting January 2025 refer to notices issued by truck manufacturers as follows:

Truck OEM Cut off date
DAF Trucks January 2025
Renault Trucks Week 9 2025

The VCA are keen to highlight the following:

Initially, it will be possible for second stage manufacturers to obtain multi-stage approvals prior to base vehicle manufacturers obtaining full GB type approval to provide more flexibility during the transition to full GB approval.  This derogation will continue until 1st August 2026 for M and N category vehicles and 1 August 2027 for O category vehicles.

This statement is not related to any VCA policy or legislative announcement.
