Rubbing Plate 2

What is the trailer "bed plate" or "rubbing plate"?

The trailer bed plate — also known as the rubbing plate — is a thick, horizontal steel plate fitted to the underside of the trailer's front end. It’s designed to rest on and articulate over the tractor unit’s fifth wheel during coupling and normal operation.

As the primary contact surface between trailer and tractor, the bed plate provides a smooth, hard-wearing interface that allows for pivotal movement while supporting vertical load. It also houses the kingpin, which locks into the fifth wheel to secure the connection.

Bed plates can be partial width (fitted only between the chassis I-beams) or full width to offer greater wear protection and load distribution across the front bulkhead.
