'LowGlide' Ground Coupling System | Eliminate Catwalk Risks
'LowGlide' Ground Coupling System | Eliminate Catwalk Risks
The 'LowGlide' Ground Coupling System is a safety innovation developed by Don-Bur that allows drivers to connect trailer service lines from ground level, completely eliminating the need to access the hazardous catwalk area.
Originally designed in 2009, it has since evolved into its 8th design iteration and is now fitted to around one-third of all trailers manufactured by Don-Bur. The system was recognised as Innovation of the Year at the SHP IOSH Awards 2010, highlighting its industry-leading approach to driver safety.
Originally launched as a pneumatically operated arm known as the “Nodding Donkey,” the concept was later redeveloped into a fully mechanical system with fewer components and improved durability.
Thanks to its slimline design, LowGlide is also an ideal solution for trailers fitted with fridge units on the front bulkhead, where space is typically limited.
In addition to factory-fit installations, we also manufacture retro-fit kits to suit trailers produced by other OEMs, enabling operators to upgrade existing fleets with the same safety and ergonomic benefits.
Safe, Simple, Ground-Level Operation
The LowGlide system allows the driver to remain safely on the ground, standing beside the trailer, while coupling all power and service lines. When in the transit position, the coupling plate and connection heads are secured in a central position on the front bulkhead of the trailer.
To couple, the driver simply reaches for an accessible handle from the nearside of the trailer and pulls the plate outward on a sliding mechanism. As it travels, the plate also drops downwards to a working height of approximately 1.5 metres from ground level, placing all connectors at an ideal chest height.
This makes even the more stubborn air lines easier to connect—without overreaching, twisting, or climbing.
Once all lines are coupled, the plate is then pushed back into the central position and securely locked in place ready for transit.
To further enhance safety, an optional brake interlock system can be installed. This feature prevents the trailer from moving while the LowGlide coupling plate is in the extended position.
Why Eliminate the Catwalk?
The traditional catwalk coupling area poses multiple hazards:
- Strain from awkward body positions
- Slip and trip hazards
- Falls from height
- Potential roll-away injuries
LowGlide removes all of that by making the entire coupling process safer, faster, and more ergonomic.
